Making: Sheet Yarn Basket

Make this great crocheted basket out of yarn made from recycled sheets.
The intention was to make a knitting basket for myself. You know, something to keep the balls of yarn safety out of reach from the cats (since I recently woke up to find an entire skein wrapped around the legs of the coffee table). I even found a cool, easily modifiable pattern for a crocheted stash basket at Yarnspirations. And I had a bunch of Sheet Yarn I’d made and dyed with tea some years ago (Sheet Yarn Tutorial coming soon!).

It was gonna be awesome!
The cats, however, had other plans.

Seriously, these two would not stay out of this basket! I don’t know if it was the soft sheet yarn, or the fact that it was basket shaped, or just something new, but they would jump right in whenever I set it aside. And as the basket grew, my plans for using it to store my yarn dwindled.
I realized I was now crocheting our new cat toy basket.

I mean, how could I not be cool with this? It’s so cute – the frayed, tea-stained sheet yarn worked up nicely – and it’s soft enough for the kitties to grab their toys or just climb in and take a nap. And now, we have a place to store all the toys. Everyone wins. Well, my yarn is still in danger of being wrapped around the coffee table, but that’s a small price to pay for happy cats.
I modified the pattern quite a bit, so I figured I’d share my version here. I intended it to be loose and rustic looking, which the sheet yarn plays into very well, so I’m not even including a gauge. Feel free to size up or down with your crochet hook to get the stitch structure you like.
